BREAKING GROUND. For Akili Dada, underprivileged Kenyan girls are future leaders. The shy high school girl in the bright red school uniform: a future policy maker.

First of all, one of the cops is the guy from 'Slugs' who yelled 'You don't have the authority to declare Happy Birthday!' He enlists the help of Kendall, a well meaning student who is played by the guy who says 'It stinks!' He gets an equally stupid line in this movie with 'Right now we're just buying clothes without labels and trying them on for size.' But what's just as good is all the scenes between the gore scenes in which the cops try to hunt down the killer.

The savvy girl with a few chickens: an entrepreneur. And when African girls are equipped as policy makers and entrepreneurs, African women will–finally–be the ones making the decisions that affect African women. How do we know?

The savvy girl with the chickens, for example, is Elyne–an Akili Dada scholar. She sold the birds, purchased saplings, built a bridge, and reclaimed a swampy area in her community.

This is exactly the kind of innovation Akili Dada cultivates: Smart. Led by girls. Akili Dada, which translates as “Brain Sister,” is truly a leadership incubator, providing girls with scholarships and seed grants. Programs such as Young Change-Makers and Innovation in Leadership offer workshops, one-on-one mentoring, and opportunities for girls to create change in their communities. This year, with a grant from The MATCH Fund, Akili Dada will provide a number of scholarships to low-income Kenyan girls and will expand their social entrepreneur programming to rural areas and to young girls living with disabilities.

In 2004, a small group of former sex workers in Nicaragua created an organization to promote and defend the human rights and safety of women sex workers. Since then, Las Golondrinas has expanded to provide education on sexual and reproductive health rights for all women. Through advocacy, training and activism, Las Golondrinas advocates for sex workers, educates women about STIs and HIV & AIDS prevention and organizes and participates in public health campaigns. Las Golondrinas focuses its efforts on three regions in Northern Nicaragua. These three regions have some of the highest rates of violence against women in the country and are quite remote with much of the sex work revolving around the trucking industry. Las Golondrinas works with some of the most marginalized sex workers.

The majority are under the age of 30, have several children and are the only breadwinners in their family. Argentina’s migrant population is one of the largest in Latin America, with women and children disproportionately facing dangers such as trafficking and sexual exploitation. Ensuring that these women and their families have access to the resources to which they are entitled is a big job. But AMUMRA doesn’t just pitch in. They pitch a tent! Bringing information, legal advice, and professional counselling to migrant women in remote neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires, AMUMRA’s Human Rights Traveling Tent is innovative in its impermanence: every day in a new place, every day with the hardest-to-reach people. Founded by Peruvian migrants in Argentina, AMUMRA also provides women and their families with information on topics such as human rights, leadership, and employment in eight emergency villages and settlements.

This year, with the help of The MATCH Fund, AMUMRA is expanding their traveling tent to new areas and broadening their reach via national radio campaigns. Founded in 2004, Oxlajuj B’atz’ works with Indigenous women artisans from six Guatemalan communities to generate income, develop leadership skills, increase political participation, and mobilize women leaders. In Guatemala, Mayan women are at a particular disadvantage due to discrimination, poverty, illiteracy, lack of access to clean water, human rights abuses, gender violence, and the cultural belief that women should occupy domestic spaces. As part of their work for women’s economic empowerment, Oxlajuj B’atz’ is developing an innovative community tourism initiative in which Indigenous women are in the driver’s seat. By providing them with training and resources, Oxlajuj B’atz’ will strengthen the capacity of artisan women’s groups to plan and manage fair trade activities and ensure they control the profits that are generated. Association Biowa is the only organization in Benin that works to improve the conditions facing sex workers in the country. Formed in 2009 by women sex workers themselves, they work in the community to shift widely-accepted attitudes and perceptions that lead to high rates of violence against women.
