Philadelphia Parks & Recreation connects the city’s residents to the natural world, to each other, and to fun physical and social opportunities. We manage historically significant Philadelphia events and special venues, and we work with communities and organizations, leading capital projects and introducing creative programming. Philadelphia’s large, diverse parks and recreation system provides something for everyone. Listed below are some of facilities and programs we’re responsible for: • 300+ neighborhood parks, rec centers, and playgrounds • 272 miles of trails and 40 historic sites • 60 community gardens, farms, and orchards • 3 environmental education centers • 600+ baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields • 74 pools • 400+ basketball and 200+ tennis courts • 5 ice skating rinks • 6 golf courses • 25 public computer centers.

Lots of our favorites on this list! Some more that we’ve enjoyed with a toddler: Commonwealth (Oakland Pill Hill/Telegraph) is our family dinner favorite–great food with a lot of toddler-friendly options, great local beers for the grown-ups, and an ever-changing assortment of board books! (The owners have preschoolers; they offer both high chairs and booster seats.) Coach (Grand Lake), Drunken Fish (Auto Row), and Geta (Piedmont Ave) are all solid sushi spots with high chairs and kid-friendly menu options.

Grand Lake Kitchen and Kitchen 388 (both on Lower Grand) are great for kids for weekend brunch and open early. Dona Tomas (Temescal), sister restaurant to Tacubaya, also opens at 9:30 for brunch on the weekends and is kid-friendly for all meals (kids’ plate is not listed on the menu but you can order it), with a nice patio.

Boot and Shoe (Grand Lake; same owners and similar menu to Pizzaiolo, but without the chickens), Marzano, and Bellanico (both Oakland Glenview) are all very kid-friendly Italian/pizza spots for dinners (go early), and have excellent food and drinks for the adults. Arizmendi (we go to the Oakland Lakeshore location, though there are several others) is super kid-friendly and you can get takeout pizza by the slice and sit outside, which is handy.
